What happened to the supersonic airliner, the Concorde? Why was it retired from service after so much fanfare? Concorde was able to fly across the Atlantic Ocean in a little less than 3.5 hours whereas other airplanes took about 8 hours. However the fleet was eventually retired due to a combination of factors, including high operating costs, declining passenger numbers, and environmental concerns related to its high fuel consumption and noise pollution. The 2000 crash of an Air France Concorde flight, which resulted in 113 deaths, dealt a significant blow to the reputation of the aircraft and hastened its retirement which came in 2003.
