Let's kick off our study of the Middle Ages by looking at Western Europe. The Roman Empire had splintered into two halves. In the east there was the Byzantine Empire, but the west had split up into separate kingdoms rules by various Germanic tribes. Over time this morphed into the Holy Roman Empire, based in modern day Germany. Charlemagne was the first ruler of this empire, so let's learn about him and other associated figures.
