In U.S. public schools, there's a legal separation of "Church and State" which means public schools are not supposed to preach religion to students. This has caused problems for anti-evolution creationists wanting to preach creationism in schools (a religious doctrine). In an attempt to get around the law, a group of Christians invented a new supposed scientific theory called "Intelligent Design" and started having it taught in schools. It was Christian-style creationism disguised loosely as science. In the 2005 trial Kitzmiller v. Dover, a U.S. federal court ruled that ID (intelligent design) is not science, but religion repackaged under a scientific-sounding name. The Dover, Pennsylvania school board had required teachers to present ID (intelligent design) as an alternative to evolution, claiming it offered a competing explanation for the origin of life.
