Ibn Khaldun’s political skills were utilized by various rulers. He had proven himself to be especially adept at dealing with Arab & Berber tribes. In fact, starting in 1375 he even lived with a Berber tribe for more than three years in modern-day Algeria. Using the isolation and protection offered to him, during this period he started writing his well-known Muqadimmah, which was the introduction to his multi-volume universal history. This time spent with tribal society would likely have helped him form his understanding of ‘Asabiyya’. This is a type of social bond, which is characterized by a heavy dependence upon each other. It is much more likely to develop in harsh environments such as a desert or a steppe because survival as a group is more expedient than surviving on your own.
