Born in 1832, the story of the Black Widow is a tale of classic Victorian murder. Cotton travelled around England marrying lonely men, getting them to take out life insurance, and then murdering them. It was believed she killed 21 people, and she was ultimately found guilty in March 1873 of murdering three of her husbands in order to collect on their insurance policies, making her Britain’s first known female serial killer.
