On The Scene: Long rows of trees that once shaded motorists and pedestrians along Quirino Avenue in Manila are now reduced to stumps as tree-cutting operations continue for the construction of the Southern Access Link Expressway (SALEX), a major infrastructure project that will connect to the Metro Manila Skyway Stage 3.According to the project description submitted by SMC to the DENR, the Quirino Avenue segment of the SALEX will span 3.97 kilometers and feature four elevated lanes. A total of 617 trees are affected by the project, although authorities clarified that not all will be cut. Some qualified trees will instead undergo earth-balling or transplantation, depending on the assessment of DENR foresters and environmental experts.
