The future of office work is at a critical junction. Post-pandemic, the tide is turning on the work from home generation and employees are returning to a more formally structured working week. The direction that the landscape of work takes over the next few years will shape so many other aspects of our lives – our wellbeing, work-life-balance, the daily rhythms of our families, where we choose to live, how we travel. My research brings together the lessons from the past and the lens of popular culture in the present to rethink the future space that work might inhabit. Nicola Bishop is an education developer, popular culture researcher, and self-confessed 90s sitcom superfan. Her research examines how office work has been represented in literature, television, and film since the 1850s. Her book Lower-Middle-Class Nation explores the cultural history of the white-collar office worker and how perceptions of office life shape attitudes towards modern living.
