This Memorial Day, we pause to remember the men and women who never made it home. Not just with flags and ceremonies, but with real gratitude for the lives they gave so we could enjoy the freedoms we often take for granted. It’s a day when the rows of white crosses overseas carry heavier meaning, and when we’re reminded that freedom has always come at an extraordinary cost. The American Battle Monuments Commission maintains the final resting places and memorials for more than 200,000 American service members who gave their lives overseas. Established after World War I, ABMC cares for 26 permanent military cemeteries and additional monuments across 17 countries from the fields of France to the Pacific islands. The commission’s work began with the graves of World War I soldiers and expanded through World War II, Korea, and later conflicts.
