Five Italian divers died in a cave diving tragedy in the Maldives after taking a wrong turn in a pitch-black cave system. The divers, equipped only with recreational diving equipment, were found 200 metres inside the cave at a depth of 60 metres, well beyond the 40-metre limit for recreational diving. Investigators believe the divers may have stirred up sand from the cave floor, creating an optical illusion combined with a sandbank in the second chamber that disoriented them and prevented them from finding their way out before their air supply ran out.
