In his first encyclical on artificial intelligence, Pope Leo XIV has warned that AI must be "disarmed" as it could bring significant shifts to employment, health and warfare. Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah spoke at the Vatican after the pope's presentation, saying that the development of AI cannot be left solely to technology companies, urging greater oversight from religious leaders, governments and civil society. Olah said there was "a real possibility" that AI will displace human labour "at very large scale", and that companies like his operate under strong commercial, geopolitical and personal pressures that can be at odds with the broader interests of society, making outside scrutiny essential.
