Tens of thousands of Afghan students studying in Iran have been forced to return home after universities closed amid the war triggered by the US and Israeli joint offensive. Iran has long been a popular destination for Afghan students due to shared culture, religion and language, with more Afghans believed to study in Tehran than in Kabul. For many, particularly women banned from higher education in Afghanistan since 2022, studying abroad represents their only path to an academic future. Al Jazeera's Katelin Meredith reports.
