When Timur Met Ibn Khaldun

The last time Ibn Khaldun enters the history books is perhaps the most interesting one. The great Central Asian conqueror Timur had focused all of his conquering energies westward. Now at the time the Mamluks held both Egypt and Syria, so Timur decided to besiege Damascus. In 1401, the Mamluk Sultan sent Ibn Khaldun because he was very wise and very experienced in these matters. And he would have been aware of what previous cities had faced after being besieged by Timur. So the great scholar tried to level with the great conqueror; and despite popular history trying to portray Timur as a senseless barbarian, he was a man of great curiosity and thirst for knowledge. So he allowed Ibn Khaldun to spend more than a month with him in his war camp; discussing things like the Abbasids, the history of Great Men and of course the terms of surrender for Damascus.
