Approximately three million Australians provide daily unpaid care for older loved ones, people with disabilities, or those with medical conditions. Two government payments are available: carer payment (up to $1,200 per fortnight for full-time carers, subject to income and assets tests) and carer allowance ($160 per fortnight plus a $500 annual supplement, with no assets test for those earning under $250,000 combined). Many eligible carers don't apply because they underestimate the support they provide, such as reminding loved ones to shower, adjusting water temperature, preventing falls, taking them shopping, and managing medications.
