A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Monday, toppling buildings in General Santos City and triggering landslides in Sarangani province, the epicentre. Rescue operations have been hampered by powerful aftershocks of up to magnitude 6, leaving traumatised residents in evacuation camps. Hundreds have been injured, with hospitals treating patients outside while running on generators. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered urgent structural assessments of hospitals and prioritised restoring power and access to affected areas.
