Audi’s twin-turbo V8 was the first production car engine to feature an electric supercharger. It features two turbochargers, plus an electric supercharger, ensuring that this potent V8 engine never runs out of boost. How does it work? As the engine idles, airflow is routed through a single turbo, and bypasses the electric supercharger entirely. Once the driver presses the throttle, the bypass valve closes, and airflow is routed through the electric supercharger. Here, an electric motor spools up a compressor, nearly instantly providing boost, without the need for sufficient exhaust gases feeding the turbocharger. Once the exhaust pressure has built up enough to maintain boost, the electric supercharger shuts off, and a single turbo keeps the power flowing. As the engine reaches higher RPM, a second turbocharger activates, enabling the engine to achieve maximum horsepower. Cool right?
