In 224 CE, emerged a second Persian Empire under the Sasanian Dynasty, whose rulers patronized incredible advances in science and literature and actively sought to emulate their Achaemenid predecessors. Until the Sasanian era, the term Ērān was only used in reference to lands in which the Iranians lived, and thus was more conceptual than tangible. It was during the Sasanian era that Ērān also became used in reference to lands controlled by Ērānšahr: the Sasanian endonym meaning Empire of the Iranians. Essentially, Iran as a concept predates Persian hegemony, though notions of Iranian and Persian identities continue to interact with and influence each other. The notion of Iran as a nation with borders, however, is an inherently Persian idea.
