Not all Iranians are Persians, and not all people who identify as Persians are necessarily Iranian in origin either. Let me explain - by its most literal definition, one is Iranian if their ancestor’s native language can be grouped into the Iranian language sub-branch of the Indo-Iranian language branch, which is itself within the greater Indo-European language family. Per this definition, a Christian Ossetian struggling against Georgia and Russia today is as Iranian as a Shia Persian trading in Shiraz. There are roughly 200 million native speakers of Iranian languages today, such as Pashto, Kurdish, and Persian, which itself accounts for nearly half of the 200 million. All of these languages descend from the same hypothesized Proto-Iranian language, which emerged roughly 4,000 years ago on the Pontic-Caspian Steppe upon the divergence of the Iranian and Indo-Aryan or Indic peoples.
