History is a very useful subject within the scope of politics. It can be used to tether a nation to an ancient past, filled with tales of glory and achievements. In the modern period, various Muslim countries began expressing great interest in their nation’s history. Persia, the bastion of civilization that it always has been, jumped on this development enthusiastically. So much so, that its modernizing autocratic ruler Reza Shah Pahlavi, decided to officially change the country’s name to its historical one, ‘Iran’. This was the term the area was known by in the past. The only issue was the term actually implies an area much bigger than just present-day Iran. Persia is derived from Fars, which is only one of many provinces in Iran. Consequently those Persians had a domineering role in determining Iranian culture. Nonetheless, the official name change was decried by many intellectuals in neighbouring countries like Afghanistan, because “the name of the total was given to a part.” Join m
