The creation of Israel and ensuing displacement of Palestinians in 1948 generated lasting anger among Arabs at both governmental and popular levels. The loss of Palestine was a source of humiliation, and the influx of refugees burdened neighboring states. The partition itself, which triggered this, was imposed largely by foreign powers, especially the United States. With a strong Zionist lobby and an election approaching, President Harry Truman backed partition, reportedly saying, “Sorry gentlemen… I do not have hundreds of thousands of Arabs as constituents.” U.S. officials lobbied and pressured other countries, even threatening aid cuts, to secure the two-thirds majority needed for the resolution on partition to pass at the U.N.
