Some of the world’s biggest literary names are in Porto this week for the inaugural Babell literary and cultural gathering, where freedom of expression is at the heart of the programme.Two-time Booker Prize winner Margaret Atwood and acclaimed novelist Salman Rushdie are among the headline speakers, joined by Nobel Prize in Literature laureates Olga Tokarczuk and László Krasznahorkai. Babell aims to establish Porto as one of Europe’s leading book capitals, bringing together authors, artists and musicians for a series of free public events across the city. Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei has also created a new installation for the iconic Livraria Lello bookshop. Unlike most literary festivals, Babell requires no entry tickets. Instead, visitors gain access to events by purchasing a book from one of Porto’s independent bookshops.
