Simon Case, the former Cabinet secretary, served under David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer, and knows exactly why all of them ended up failing. He first met Donald Trump when he visited Washington DC with Baroness May in 2017. Trump, he says, was “much more courteous and considerate than I think people would imagine. Much more normal than people would think.” He also believes Trump “has done something very important for Europe, which is hold up a mirror to say, ‘You have not been looking after yourselves properly’” when it comes to defence spending.
