June 25 marks a turning point in Kenya’s history. What started in 2024 as youth-led protests against the Finance Bill grew into nationwide demonstrations. Led largely by Gen Z, protesters demanded justice for the fallen, an end to corruption, and real economic change. More than 60 lives were lost in the historic anti-tax protests. In this episode of the Focus on Africa podcast, host Nkechi Ogbonna sits down with BBC reporters Akisa Wandera and Thomas Mukhwana. They break down why this leaderless youth movement refuses to back down and what this means for the future of Kenya. We recorded this episode on 26th June – a day after protests brought Kenya's capital, Nairobi, to a standstill. 00:00-00:29 Coming up 00:35-00:58 Introduction 00:59-01:46 Meeting Akisa and Thomas 01:47-07:29 A review of the Kenya Gen Z protests 07:30-11:16 Anniversary of Gen Z Protests 11:17-13:42 How do authorities intervene during protests? 13:43-18:11 Cases of sexual violence in protests 18:12-20:0
