Following effusive activity on the eastern flank of Mount Etna, associated with an increase in volcanic tremor, the Italian Civil Protection Department on June 26 raised the alert level for the volcano from green to yellow. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reported that lava had started to flow on Etna’s eastern flank at an altitude of around 3,000 metres. The Civil Protection Department said this scenario could lead to an escalation toward more energetic activity, prompting authorities to strengthen monitoring and raise the alert level. Mount Etna, located on Sicily’s east coast, is Europe’s largest volcano.
