A powerful magnitude 5.7 earthquake recently struck outside Mount Fuji, Japan's largest and tallest mountain and volcano, site of many large eruptions across history. The last time Mount Fuji erupted was in 1707 after a powerful magnitude 8.7 megaquake struck nearby and to the southwest, and now big earthquakes have been battering Japan to the northeast in 2025 and 2026, raising the risk that an eruption could be imminent. The time between when Mount Fuji awakens and when it finally blows may be just days to weeks, meaning the Japanese may receive little advance warning.
