Geophysicist Stefan Burns reports on the close flyby of asteroid 1997 NC1, a near Earth asteroid (NEO) with a diameter of ~950 meters. This is the closest flyby of this potentially very destructive asteroid in 400+ years at a separation distance of just 6.7 lunar distances (0.017 AU). Statistically this is a once-in-a-decade event, and with our current space technology, we'd be powerless to stop this asteroid or one similar from impacting should our paths align. With all the recent fireball sightings and small meteor impacts that have occurred recently, is the close flyby of asteroid 1997 NC1 a sign of a larger wave of space objects heading towards Earth?
