At 17, as I stand on the edge of life-defining choices, I keep being asked the same question: “What’s your backup plan?” In a world reshaped by technology and society, is acting really riskier than any other career—or are we all just guessing what the future holds? We’re told to future-proof our lives, but perhaps the most secure foundation isn’t a job title; it’s grit, adaptability, and passion. The skills I gain as an aspiring actor—poise, presence, performance—won’t disappear even if certain industries do. So, instead of planning for my dream to fail, I’m choosing to plan for it to happen. Lizzy is a student at Francis Holland, Regent's Park. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
