Olivia Yeo has ankylosing spondylitis, a lifelong autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation in the spine and joints. After learning there was no cure, she began to question whether it was fair to ask her boyfriend, Lim Jian Ye, to stay. Chronic pain meant cancelling plans and dates. It also left Olivia wondering whether she could hold down a job or cope with mounting medical bills. She eventually initiated a conversation about breaking up. Jian Ye admits he had been thinking the same thing. Then Olivia asked him to imagine he was the one who became paralysed after an accident. "Then I tell you, I want to leave you because you are like this." He knew she never would, and that gave him the answer he needed. Today, the couple are planning their wedding, choosing venues with Olivia's accessibility needs in mind and building the future they almost walked away from.
