New York City Council employee, Rafael Rubio Bohorquez, has been released after spending more than five months in ICE custody. Bohorquez, a data analyst for the NYC Council, was detained in January during a routine asylum interview in Long Island and ordered to be deported to Venezuela. His arrest sparked protests, a petition, and public debate among political leaders and immigration officials. City Council Speaker Julie Menin argued Bohorquez had Temporary Protected Status as a Venezuelan national, that was valid through October of this year, and a habeas petition was filed to keep him in New York.
