Large demonstrations on the streets of cities across South Africa after protest groups had set Tuesday as the deadline for undocumented people to leave the country. Huge numbers of police were on the streets to prevent repeats of previous anti-immigrant violence. Businesses were closed and many migrants, who are mostly from other African states, stayed off work.
