At 18, one of Shaista Qistina's biggest goals is something many people do without thinking: Taking the bus or train on her own. After being bullied at school, anxiety gradually kept Shaista from leaving the house. At 14, she stopped going to school. By the time social worker Gayle Gan from Fei Yue Community Services first met her, Shaista had not left home for more than six months. Since then, Shaista has returned to sit her N-Levels through Project Starfish, a programme offering free classes for out-of-school youth. She also goes to the gym regularly and hopes to one day travel on public transport by herself. Shutdown gains rare access to four teenagers in Singapore navigating social withdrawal, and the families and social workers helping them find a way back.
