In this thought-provoking TEDx talk, Tara Delić explores the fundamental question of what it means to be human by contrasting our core instinct to care with the protective behaviors we develop out of fear. Drawing from the history of Homo sapiens and Neanderthals, as well as personal anecdotes and recent student-led movements in Serbia, Delić introduces the concept of the "lenses" through which we view the world—shaped by experiences of empathy, kindness, and pain. She argues that society often forces us to build protective layers around our authentic, creative, and compassionate cores, leading to detachment and systemic oppression. Ultimately, Delić delivers an inspiring call to action, reminding us that genuine societal change is a marathon built on the collective efforts of dreamers, and encourages us to reconnect with our humanity by choosing empathy over fear.
