It was strange to see Thomas Tuchel furiously scribbling memos as the second-half hydration break approached, with his team a mere 22 minutes from being bundled out of the World Cup. Surely, on £5m a year, he was capable of conveying the urgency of this situation to his players without notes? What followed was, in fairness, a minor miracle, as his tactical tweaks helped engineer a glorious turnaround, with substitute Anthony Gordon providing the two assists that enabled Harry Kane to haul this team out of a ghastly mire and save the manager’s job. What a majestic flourish by an astounding player, whose 13 goals on the grandest stage take him past Pelé’s 12. Except Tuchel surely cannot keep relying on his superstars to bail him out.
