Can the probiotics in yoghurt actually survive your gut? Talking Point sent 10 popular yoghurts to a lab that simulates the human gut to see how well their probiotic bacteria survive digestion. The biggest surprise? The yoghurt with the highest bacteria count didn't pass the test. But "bacteria count is only one part of the story," said Professor William Chen, director of NTU's Future Ready Food Safety Hub. He explained that probiotic bacteria also produce beneficial compounds, such as vitamins and short-chain fatty acids, which remain in the yoghurt even if the bacteria don't survive in the gut.
