WhatsApp is preparing to introduce a new feature that would allow users to communicate using usernames instead of phone numbers. But before the feature could be rolled out, the Union government stepped in and asked the platform to put its plans on hold. So, why is the government concerned? The username feature is designed to give users more privacy. Instead of sharing their phone number with a new contact, users would be able to share a unique username, along with an optional PIN.
