Before SketchUp and CAD, woodworkers solved design problems with pencil, paper, full-size drawings, templates, and prototypes. And even with all the digital tools available today, I still think some things are better worked out at full scale. In this video, I’m sharing an excerpt from a Wood Whisperer Guild live meeting where I walk through the process of designing a large table with some tricky angled legs and joinery. The initial idea started in SketchUp, and I even used AI to generate a quick visual reference, but neither one gave me the real numbers I needed to actually build the thing. That’s where full-size drawing shines. It helps you see proportions, work through angles, discover joinery problems, and sometimes even turn those problems into design features.
