Germany's governing coalition is facing mounting pressure as the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) leads opinion polls in parts of the country. Chancellor Friedrich Merz pledged tougher migration policies and economic reforms, but persistent inflation, sluggish growth and public frustration have fueled support for the opposition. In the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, the AfD is polling strongly ahead of next year's state election, raising the prospect of the party leading a German state government for the first time in the post-World War II era.
