Once, after his dream had been shattered, Mr. Masuda found himself in debt and withdrew from the world. What saved him was a friend who came to his room, opened the windows to let in fresh air, and helped him clean up. As he scrubbed the toilet until it shone, tears streaming down his face, he regained the inner strength to believe, “I can start over again.” A messy room is “proof that you are doing your best out in the world.” Rather than blaming yourself, Mr. Masuda encourages people to begin by polishing just one place, such as a faucet, until it shines.
