“China is kind of a complicated story,” says climate reporter David Wallace-Wells. “They're both the world's biggest emitter … and also the source of the greatest hope for climate change.” Wallace-Wells also explains that countries across the Global South have “taken decarbonization into their own hands,” in part because the technology necessary to do so can be cheaply bought from China.
