The Philippines' senate has opened an impeachment trial against Vice President Sara Duterte, who faces charges of threatening to assassinate President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, misusing more than $10m in intelligence funds, bribery and unexplained wealth. Duterte, who has denied all allegations, did not attend the first day of proceedings. The trial, expected to last up to eight months, has deepened a bitter political rift between Duterte and Marcos, former allies who won the 2022 elections by a landslide. A conviction would permanently bar her from seeking the presidency in 2028, where polls currently place her as the frontrunner. Al Jazeera's Barnaby Lo reports from Manila, the Philippines.
