China test-fired a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile from a submarine into the Pacific Ocean between Nauru and Tonga, providing Australia with only two hours' notice. The missile, fitted with a dummy warhead, was launched at 2:01pm East Coast time, within hours of Australia signing a defence pact with Fiji.
