A major Telstra network outage disrupted services across Australia, causing rail services to halt in Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT, and knocking out EFTPOS systems for tens of thousands of businesses. More than 300 triple zero emergency calls failed to connect during the outage, with police dispatched to conduct welfare checks on 79 callers Telstra was unable to contact. The telecommunications giant attributed the blackout to broken timers in data centres in Sydney and Melbourne, with full services restored by 4pm, though the company now faces potential fines in the tens of millions of dollars.
