A nationwide Telstra network outage crippled mobile phones, digital payment systems and rail networks across Australia, leaving millions of customers without service. The telecommunications failure forced V-Line train services to shut down in Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT, caused EFTPOS systems to fail in thousands of businesses, and resulted in more than 300 failed Triple Zero emergency calls. Telstra attributed the outage to broken timers in two data centres in Sydney and Melbourne, with the company now facing potential fines in the tens of millions of dollars.
