When he was trapped in war-torn Mogadishu, Abdi Nor Iftin hid beneath his bed with a small tape recorder, secretly documenting his life amid fear and chaos. In this deeply personal TEDx talk, he reveals how storytelling became his lifeline — and how even the quietest voice can break through fear, censorship, and silence. Abdi Nor Iftin's story was featured on the acclaimed This American Life episode “Abdi and the Golden Ticket.” Today, he is a writer, speaker, and advocate for free expression, immigration, and human connection across cultures. Through his work, Abdi explores what it means to belong, to speak freely, and to hold onto hope in the darkest moments. In this talk, he shares the hidden recordings and experiences that helped him survive Mogadishu — and ultimately led him to find his voice in America. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
