Walther von Seydlitz was one of the most controversial German generals to come out of Stalingrad. Trapped with the Sixth Army in the winter of 1942–43, he urged a breakout, clashed with Friedrich Paulus, and eventually crossed into Soviet hands while men from his own side fired after him. But captivity did not end his war. In this video, I follow Seydlitz from the ruins of Stalingrad to the Soviet-backed League of German Officers, his condemnation by Hitler, the punishment of his family, his later conviction under Stalin, and the strange fate of a man both dictators sentenced to death.
