Reuters photographers were in Washington covering July 4 celebrations when photographer Nathan Howard began seeing social media reports that members of Patriot Front — a white supremacist group whose members use fascist imagery and typically conceal their identities in public — were marching in the city. Howard and fellow photographer Cheney Orr then set out to document the group. One photo in particular, taken by Orr, has attracted global attention. It shows a woman in a green T-shirt sitting alone on the train, her face impassive. Members of the Patriot Front are sitting and standing in front of her, behind her and next to her.
