Qatar has announced the death of former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, 74, whom the Amiri Diwan called a great national loss. Ruling from 1995–2013, he drove gas-fuelled growth, founded Al Jazeera, created Qatar Foundation, expanded diplomacy and secured hosting of the 2022 World Cup before handing power to his son, Sheikh Tamim.
