Former government adviser Charlie Rowley warns that social media is fuelling an increasingly toxic and dangerous political climate following the death of Ann Widdecombe. Rowley says politicians, broadcasters and public figures now face relentless online abuse, while commentators deliberately “amp up” extreme opinions to attract followers, clicks and bookings. He argues that some influencers turn outrage into a livelihood, forcing them to become ever more provocative. The pair criticise self-styled “citizen journalists” for circulating warped or hyperbolic versions of events and warn that algorithms repeatedly expose users to the same claims until they accept them as fact. Rowley also pays tribute to Widdecombe’s willingness to hold robust, fact-based debates with political opponents, warning that nuance and civil disagreement are rapidly disappearing from public life. #AnnWiddecombe #CharlieRowley #SocialMedia #PoliticalHatred #OnlineAbuse #FreeSpeech #CitizenJournalism #UKPolitics
