New artificial intelligence data centres will be forced to underwrite or supply their own power and minimise their use of water under new AI standards to be introduced to parliament. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also announced the creation of an Office of AI within his department to oversee the design of the new AI standards. Mr Albanese said he was confident that Australia could make the technology work in the national interest. "If we move with purpose now, if we back ourselves, if we trust in our values and invest in our people, if we set our national standards high, then I have every confidence that Australia can seize this moment and make it our own," he said.
