Understanding the Circle of Fifths and Key Signatures

The circle of fifths shows you the relationship between all 12 keys at a glance — and once you can read it, key signatures stop being something you memorize and start being something you can see. I walk through the chart key by key: starting at C (no sharps, no flats), moving right through G, D, A, E, and B as the sharps stack up one at a time, then moving left through F, Bb, Eb, Ab, and Db/Gb on the flat side. The center of the circle shows the relative minor for each major key — C major and A minor share no sharps or flats, G major and E minor both have one, and so on.
