Before George Washington became the face of the American Revolution, he was a young Virginia militia officer desperate to prove himself on the dangerous frontier. In 1753 and 1754, Washington was sent into the Ohio Country, where British, French, and Native American interests collided over land, trade, and empire. What began as a diplomatic mission soon turned into a military expedition, as French forces seized the Forks of the Ohio and built Fort Duquesne.
